“Will I Lose My TRICARE After Divorce?-
If you’re a military spouse going through a divorce, healthcare coverage is probably one of your biggest concerns. The good news? You might not lose TRICARE right away—and in some cases, you can keep it long-term. Here’s how it works.
1. The 20/20/20 Rule: Keep Full Benefits
If you meet these three conditions:
20+ years of marriage
20+ years of military service
At least 20 years of overlap
…then you qualify for TRICARE indefinitely, just like an active-duty family member.
2. The 20/20/15 Rule: 1 Year of Transitional Coverage
If you were married for 20+ years and your spouse served 20+ years, but the overlap was only 15-19 years, you get:
1 additional year of TRICARE after divorce
No enrollment fees during that time
3. What If You Don’t Qualify for Either Rule?
– Lose TRICARE immediately upon divorce
– Must find alternative coverage (employer plan, Affordable Care Act, etc.)
4. What About Children?
– Children keep TRICARE until age 21 (or 23 if in college)
– No changes to their coverage, even if you remarry
5. What If My Ex-Spouse Leaves the Military?
– 20/20/20 benefits continue as long as your ex remains eligible for military retirement
– If they separate before retirement, you lose TRICARE
